Keryn Cooks at CulinaryOn

Do you ever get a headache planning where to dine during your big anniversaries or birthdays but you’ve already been on too many picnics, tried too many restaurants and you simply just ran out of ideas?

Well, I have an idea for you!

** Disclaimer: The following happened under a safe and controlled environment, no kitchens were burnt down nor were there any casualties from the consumption of food cooked by Stephanie and I. WE DID IT!! :D **

A couple weeks back I was invited to attend a culinary class, titled “Dinner in Paris”, organized by CulinaryOn.

I swear their interior is too pretty. I spot #ootd spots everywhere la!

For me, I can only cook simple Asian dishes and i’ve never attempted any other cuisines after I burnt my aglio olio. So I was definitely looking forward to it. I suppose Stephanie (@tintedwhiteroses), whom I asked along with me, was too because I don’t think she cooks that often (or at all) either hahaha

The menu for that night’s "Dinner in Paris" consisted of:
-        -  Salad with Salmon and Passion fruit
-       -   Duck with Apples and Chocolate sauce &
-       -   Crème brûlée

And our very charismatic chef for the night was Chef Giuseppe D’Angelo who was also the Jury of the first-ever Master Chef Junior in Russia. How cool is that!

My class had a total of 8 participants including Stephanie and myself however I was told the usual classes normally had about 20 participants. I definitely appreciated that my class was more cozy and personal.

We all started by gathering around the chef’s table as he started with his introductions and went through the menu with us. He’s really animated and jolly, which definitely brought up the energy of our very quiet and shy class. (Yes, I can be quiet and shy too. Shush)

Appetizers: Salad with Salmon & Passion Fruit

I bet you’ve never cured your own salmon! Neither have I ever, but they taught us how that night. The prep took less than 10 mins and you just have to let the salmon sit there for an hour. That fast and simple! The salad was done pretty quicky because everyone had role in preparing every meal and that was so fun.

Our cured salmon topped with our passion fruit salad sauce
Steph all prepared to help with tossing of the salad!

I’m not a fan of salads but the fact that I had a hand in making almost everything, I had to eat and savour the fruits of my labour!!!

Steph went crazy at the amount of salmon in the salad. She finished them all and didn't even touch the greens hahahhaha

Mains: Duck with Apples and Chocolate sauce

This time we gathered around a cooking station instead of the Chef’s table where he showed us step by step, how to prepare the duck before we returned back to our own stations. This is where you start making more friends! Because of the size of the class we only required 3 to a station, so Steph and myself got to meet Claire! I’m so glad everyone brought their own strengths to the table and we managed to whip up a very savoury, delicious duck dish.

hi claire
I'm smiling on the surface but actually wincing inside because the oil kept popping out on my skin!!
Look at how clean that bone was prepared and how crisp those skins are! Our efforts paid off guys!
Honestly, I don’t think I could have done this myself. The next time I eat a duck confit or any other duck meal for that matter, I will appreciate it 5893237 times more. The preparation for a duck is SO TEDIOUS OH GOD.

Voila! As modelled and presented by our awesome chef!
Doesn't that look good! Okay la, my plating still needs work haha

Desserts: Crème brûlée

Couldn't have done it without these girls! :')

Here comes the cheap thrill of the night where everyone got to play with a kitchen butane torch! I now know of the one skill that I’m good at because my Crème brûlée was torched to perfection hehe

Everyone gets a chance!

Okay, enough about my fun and enjoyment in the class.

Why is this a good date idea?

Know how different every experience of travelling together, living together and eating together is? How about cooking together? Teamwork is key here because trust me, things can get hectic in the kitchen especially when there’s multi-tasking involved!

How many restaurants have you been to? How many of them created a unique experience for you? I always believed that 10 years down the road, you’re not gonna remember what you ate or how it tasted like. All you are gonna remember is the experience there you had and the emotions you felt then.

How long has it been since you attended a class? Now picture this, you’re back in your favourite class with your favourite teacher. Remember how interactive and fun the class was and how much you enjoyed it? That’s how the classes felt like, and now you can enjoy it together with your girlfriend, boyfriend, best friend, friends and family!

Plus you'll get to know your partner so much better amidst the fun because I definitely did with steph! Thanks for not burning down the kitchen with me babe

Now let’s talk finances. So yes it is a little pricey seeing how it ranges $118/pax up to $168 depending on your chosen menu sets. It’s actually about the same price as Nox, heh. But honestly, I always hear people spending about $100/pax for dinner during their anniversaries and even birthdays. Plus, this has good food, good fun,a really good overall experience and you gain a skill! So Wai not (ha, I’m so punny)

Alternatively, they also have Skillsfuture classes which are subsidised by the Singapore government that you can pay for this with your SKILLSFUTURE CREDITS. (which I currently still do not have access to untill I hit 25 next year boo)

In case you’re keeping a look out for a event venue, you should definitely turn to Culinary On to hold parties and even wedding luncheon/dinners there!

PS. This isn't a sponsored post okay. Sure I was invited to attend the class but I was neither asked nor obliged to write up on it. I genuinely enjoyed myself that night with Stephanie which is why I decided to share this good lobang with y'all. #legit #truestory

PPS. I now have a certificate of excellence for my OUTSTANDING dishes and tasty performance for that night. I kid you not hahhaha now no one can argue that I can't cook. I HAVE A CERTIFICATE, DO YOU? Heh heh heh
